The Steven Kent Winery – Lineage Wines Tasting

Steven Kent Lineage Tasting 1

Members of the Livermore Wineries App Team at Lineage Tasting

The Livermore Winery App team had a unique opportunity to taste some of Livermore Valley’s finest Bordeaux blends through the Steven Kent Lineage Tasting. If you haven’t already heard, Lineage is the finest wine produced by The Steven Kent Winery and is rarely served in a tasting room experience. Traditionally the only way to taste these fine wines was to belong to the top tier Lineage Club, however Steven Kent Winery is offering a limited time experience until October 27th.

The Lineage tasting is $25 per person if you belong to the club, or $50 per person for general public and comes complete with a cheese pairing (fee refundable with over $200 wine purchase). Our guides through the tasting were Tasting Room Manager Janice Fisher and specialist Tony Robustelli.

The Lineage concept was designed to showcase the maximum potential of what Livermore has to offer from grape production to winemaking. Each year a Lineage wine is created in limited quantities (circa 100 cases) and attended to daily in order to meet winemaker Steven Kent Mirassou’s quality standards. On our flight menu was a line of bottled Lineage wines dating from 2007 to 2010. This tasting came complete with a cheese and olive tapenade pairing…which was quite tasty!

The grapes for Lineage wines have traditionally come solely from Ghielmetti Vineyard but now include Home Ranch and Smith Ranch as well. Each wine is composed of four Bordeaux varietals with the workhorse being Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by either Merlot or Cabernet Franc and smaller amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec. Wines spend time aging in barrels anywhere from 26 to 28 months with mainly new French Oak.

Our tasting was set up in order of young to older wines with the 2010 Lineage at start. Each wine has a unique identity of tasting components. Here are some of our impressions:

2010 Lineage – vibrant nose, blackberry, eucalyptus, licorice, red fruit, clove, cinnamon, brown sugar, earth, blueberry, currants, violet and mild spice aroma, nutty mid flavor, dry finish.  We can see this wine having great potential in the coming years!

2009 Lineage – coriander, red fruit, mint, silky texture, baked blackberry pie, violet, rose aromas.  Ripe, smooth finish [27% merlot!], some spice, light color, big mouth feel.

2008 Lineage – vanilla, brown sugar, black licorice, blueberry, cherry, raspberry, tobacco, some earthiness, smooth finish, medium mouth feel, deep purple color.  Pairs best with the Machego cheese.

2007 Lineage – black licorice, bacon, raspberry, baked cherry pie, light to medium-full body, great finish, light mouth feel.
